WCIO’s first free-standing “Best of WCIO” meeting is off to an explosive launch at the Sheraton Convention Center in Buenos Aires. The pre-meeting registration of over 800 surged to over 1000 on opening day, with standing room only in the main hall for sessions covering principles of interventional oncology and management of primary liver cancers. 

Organized by Ricardo Garcia Monaco from the Hospital Italiano in BA in collaboration with the WCIO, the meeting offers the popular format of expert lectures by oncologic specialists for each cancer followed by mock tumor boards with an emphasis on integrated care. 45 Argentinian specialists were joined by 15 international faculty from Latin America, Europe and the US. 

The diversity of the audience exceeded our expectations with broad participation by medical and surgical oncologists spanning Latin America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Residents and medical students were also well represented. A lively exhibit hall exposed registrants to all the major IO technologies, supplemented by industry-sponsored satellite symposia and workshops. 

Robust audience engagement both during and outside sessions is testimony to the success of the WCIO mission to foster IO as a clinical discipline around the world. 

Guerbet sponsored the lunchtime symposium on chemoembolization, ethanol embolization in the kidney and liver, glue embolization, and thoracic duct embolization, while Siemens and the Society of Interventional Radiology supported workshops in the afternoon.

Endless Argentinian beef, Malbec and tango into the wee hours will make the morning start on Day 2 a bit rough for those of us from the northern hemisphere (how do the Latins do it?), but I can’t wait!
