Best of WCIO Argentina Day 2
“Best of WCIO” in Buenos Aires continued with sessions on NET and CRC liver metastases, with the universal theme of how and when to prioritize surgery, systemic therapies, and liver-directed therapies. Economic barriers to access to technology was a prevalent concern throughout Latin America. Another challenge posed was how to provide oncologists (and their patients) with expert consultation when only about 5% have access to a tumor board. The potential for telemedicine to create virtual tumor boards was proposed as a model solution.
Celanova put together a great lunch symposium with Jim Caridi and Goetz Richter. Afternoon workshops highlighted how-to and hands-on training on drug-eluting microspheres and ablation.
Lung cancer and renal cancer sessions were done jointly with the Argentinian Association of Respiratory Medicine and the Argentinian Society of Urology, just two of the 16 societies and organizations endorsing the Best of WCIO meeting in addition to the SIR.
Boundless kudos to Ricardo Garcia Monaco (far right in picture) for organizing this global collaboration to advance Interventional Oncology in Latin America. WCIO is looking for volunteers in other regions of the world to host similar collaborations and help fulfill our mission to make IO a recognized clinical discipline worldwide.
