There are just a few weeks left until the premier oncology event of the year. WCIO 2016 will take place in Boston this year, a fresh locale for an even better event with expanded educational tracks and more opportunities for networking. Each year, the WCIO programming committee works to provide attendees with a premiere educational event by inviting trusted and experience faculty from all over the world to lend their expertise in the field of interventional oncology.
Julius Chapiro, MD, co-director of the Interventional Oncology Research Lab at Charite` University Hospital, will be joining WCIO again this year as an abstract reviewer. IO Insights recently spoke with Dr. Chapiro to discuss the value of interventional oncology, what drew him to the event, and what he thinks key takeaways will be from WCIO 2016.
IO Insights: When did you first attend the WCIO Conference?
Dr. Julius Chapiro: I first attended in 2014 while working as a post-doctoral student in Jeff Geschwind's lab at Johns Hopkins University.
IO: What attracted you to the event in the first place?|
JC: It is the only platform to provide focused IO education and allows for effective scientific research exchange between top-notch institutions and key opinion leaders. The program is unique because there is almost no overlap of sessions. You don't have to choose between good and better! You can get it all!
IO: What are key takeaways from the WCIO Conference?
JC: The field is growing and interventional oncology has become indispensable for the treatment of cancer. We are faster, better, and more cost-effective than most invasive therapies. A structured educational pathway within the new IR residency will help establish IO as the fourth pillar of oncology next to medical oncology, radiation oncology, and surgical oncology!
IO: What advice would you give to a first-time attendee?
JC: Just attend! It's a great congress!
IO: Will you be joining us again for WCIO 2016 in Boston? If so, what are you most looking forward to at the conference this year?
JC: I will be there and I am looking forward to the HCC, basic science educational pathway, and the abstract sessions! As an abstract reviewer, I am deeply impressed by the high quality of submitted IO research!
