WCIO took the next step on its mission to enhance global IO education with IO University’s first live webinar. An expert panel from the University of Pennsylvania, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and the University of Maryland discussed the diagnosis and treatment options for malignant ascites, technique of Denver shunt placement, and troubleshooting of failing shunts.
Registrants came from four continents. Audience polling reflected that the majority saw about 10% malignant ascites in their practice, consistent with the literature. 75% were doing tunneled peritoneal catheters routinely, and 57% did Denver shunts. Only 1/3 managed their patients’ diuretics. 40% informed ascites patients about alternative management strategies after the first paracentesis, another 40% after 2-4 taps.
A lively text interchange went on during and after the presentations. Palliative interventions are high value IO services that provide rapid and durable improvement in quality of life, often generating more gratitude from patients and referring physicians than treating the cancer itself.
WCIO thanks CareFusion for sponsoring the webinar, which is available for passive viewing on IO-Central.org for 1 hour CME credit at no charge.
