Why SIO? Why now?
At our core, interventional oncologists are interventional radiologists. We are all members of SIR, CIRSE, APSCVIR, or similar societies as the primary professional organizations of our specialty.
But optimal patient care is no longer the province of solitary specialists; rather it is provided by multidisciplinary care teams. This has lead to the genesis of diseased-centered subspecialty societies for arterial diseases, acute and chronic venous diseases, dialysis, spine, and stroke, where interventional radiologists join with other specialists to advance care for specific patient populations.
The Society of Interventional Oncology serves the same mission for image-guided cancer therapies. The leaders in SIO wear many hats in SIR and CIRSE, RSNA and ESR, ASCO and ESMO, NCCN, and the NCI Cooperative Groups, fostering collaborations within these larger organizations to promote IO. In addition, SIO offers unique benefits including the IO University*, a $1.3 million on-line oncology education platform that will support both the new IR/DR training pathway in the U.S. and CIRSE’s new IO curriculum in Europe; a $0.5 million research grant program for immuno-interventional oncology+; IO-Central.org and IO Insights for news and on-line interactivity, and of course the WCIO - the world’s only scientific meeting for interventional oncology, now in it 12th year.
The SIO leads the way in collaborative multi-disciplinary research, education, and practice development in this fast-growing fourth pillar of oncology. Become a Founding Member in 2017 and share the excitement working at the frontier of medicine.
